Barney Fife on Global Warming (aka Climate Change)

We all need to seek the experts on any topic that comes up. Yesterday, I heard a comment by Barney Fife (as good as any other expert) on Global Warming.

Barney, as you probably know, was Andy Taylor's deputy on the Andy Griffith show and had an expert opinion on almost every subject. The episode is titled "Opie's Newspaper" and it was aired on March 22, 1965 (see IMDB for details)

In one scene, Andy is staring out of the kitchen door, Aunt Bee and Barney are sitting at the table. The conversation goes like this:

Andy: Nice day, you know that?

Aunt Bee: It seems a little warm to me.

Barney: Well, the weather's been changing so much lately. Must be the bomb.

That proves it. Global warming is a communist plot.

(Turns out I'm not the only one interested in this episode. See the first q&a at this site. There is also a podcast with the explanation of this comment).

It never ceases to amaze how the simple mention of global warming in a news story sets off a tsunami of rhetoric. It generally comes from a very vocal minority that would go to its grave swearing that the sum total of climate science is a liberal plot to enrich Al Gore. Alternately, we are told the Martian ice caps are melting, proof that solar radiation and sunspot cycles — and not greenhouse gases — are the cause of planetary warmups.

Bhuvan, welcome to my blog. I believe you're probably my first commenter from India. Now that I've made a presence in your country, I know that I'm truly on the WORLDwideweb.

I have to confess, my comments in this post were mostly tounge-in-cheek. Watching the episode of Andy Griffith made me think of the idea. I honestly don't think of global warming as a communist plot, but have always liked that line.

To be completely honest, I don't think often at all about global warming. God gave us this earth, and told us to dominate it. We are supposed to be good stewards of what He gave us, so a certain amount of ecology makes good sense. But too often, eco-friendly people have us worshipping at a green altar and confusing our real purpose here.

I checked out your blog and see that you've written quite a bit (or at least passed along a lot of information) about global warming. I'll spend some more time next week reading your entries. The article you referenced here is good, even if I disagree.

Thanks for your comments.
